Accuracy first

We do not publish information we cannot verify. Every factual claim in a story must be supported by at least one named, on-record source, an official document, or direct observation by a reporter. Where a single source is used, that is noted in the story. Where facts are disputed, both sides are represented.

We prefer to be right over being first. When breaking news requires speed, we clearly label what is confirmed and what is unconfirmed, and we update stories as new information becomes available.

Sources and attribution

We name our sources wherever possible. We grant anonymity only when a source faces genuine risk of retaliation, legal jeopardy, or professional harm, and only when the information they provide is material to the public interest and cannot be obtained any other way.

When a source requests anonymity, we describe them in a way that helps readers understand their position (e.g., "a senior VA official who was not authorised to speak publicly"). We do not allow sources to review or approve stories before publication.

Independence and conflicts of interest

The Mil Reporter editorial team makes all coverage decisions independently. Our relationship with MilTransitionCare — which funds this publication — does not influence story selection, framing, or conclusions.

Sponsored content and tool integrations are labelled clearly as such and are separated from editorial content. Reporters and editors must disclose any personal financial interests, prior employment, or close relationships that could affect their coverage of a story, and are recused from relevant stories where a conflict exists.

Corrections policy

We correct errors promptly and transparently. Corrections are appended to the original story and noted at the top of the article with the date. We do not silently edit published articles to remove errors without a correction notice. Significant errors may warrant a separate correction article.

To report an error, email editor@milreporter.com with "Correction" in the subject line and a link to the story.

Opinion and analysis

Opinion pieces and analysis are clearly labelled as such. They represent the views of the named author, not of The Mil Reporter as a whole. News reporting and opinion are handled by separate staff.

Images and video

Photographs and video are not digitally altered except for standard colour and exposure corrections. Composite images or illustrations are labelled. We credit all images with the photographer's name and source. We do not use AI-generated images as photojournalism.

Use of AI tools

Reporters may use AI tools to assist with research, transcription, and background reading. AI-generated text is never published as original reporting. Any story that relies substantially on AI-generated research is verified independently before publication.

Complaints and feedback

We take reader feedback seriously. If you believe we have fallen short of these standards, contact us at editor@milreporter.com. We will respond within five business days.
